Otherside, the long awaited metaverse from Yuga Labs, is now open and operational. Almost 4500 users have already tested the video game, starting the first phase of their journey to the other side. At this time, only holders of a non-fungible token (NFT) of Otherside land have been able to access it.
A successful first trip to Otherside
On Saturday 16 July, almost 4500 people were invited to join the Otherside metaverse. Called “Travellers”, these individuals were able to participate in a preview tour of the immersive platform developed by Yuga Labs, the famous non-fungible token (NFT) studio.
The programme included an excursion into the ‘biogenic swamp’, the central element of the parallel universe developed by Yuga Labs and made famous with the success of Bored Ape. All guests were holders of “Otherdeeds”, NFTs representing title deeds to Otherside’s digital plots of land.

Shortly after this first experience, Otherside developers have confirmed that only owners of Otherdeeds will be allowed to participate in the game in its first phase. At the time of writing, the minimum price to purchase one of these plots of land is 2.7 Ethers (ETH), or about $4000.
This criterion distinguishes Otherside from other currently known metaverses, which are open to all Internet users. However, exclusivity and astronomical entry barriers are the main ingredients that have made other Yuga Labs projects successful in the past.
It remains to be seen whether the studio will opt for this spirit of unattainable scarcity in the future, or follow its initial goal of creating an “open metaverse” for all.
