Mark Cuban suffers a hack on one of his cryptocurrency wallets

Mark Cuban is a famous billionaire businessman and investor, best known for being the owner of the Dallas Mavericks NBA club. He is also known within the ecosystem for having taken part in financing projects such as Arbitrum (ARB), OpenSea and Polygon (MATIC).

Despite his experience, he unfortunately suffered a loss of around $870,000 worth of cryptocurrencies overnight when one of his hot wallets was hacked, resulting in the theft of the assets held at the address. First, suspicious movements were first reported on X by user @WazzCrypto:

Contacted by our DL News colleagues, Mark Cuban explained that he had “been on MetaMask for the first time in months”, and that this accident must have been caused by downloading a fraudulent version of the extension:

“I’ve been on MetaMask for months and I’ve been on MetaMask for months.

“I’m pretty sure I downloaded a version of MetaMask with some crap in it. “

Originally, he would have searched for “Circle” and not “MetaMask” on his search browser. The extension crashed several times before he realised the situation when DL News contacted him. Only this wallet was affected and the remaining assets were transferred safely by the investor.

This event is a reminder that no one is immune to error and that it is important to be careful about the extension you download. As far as MetaMask is concerned, the official link is metamask.io, and any other website could result in the loss of funds by downloading the application.

The use of a hardware wallet is also essential to prevent such hacks, by adding physical validation to each transaction.
