Nike NFTs coming soon to Fortnite?

by Thomas

Nike is apparently planning to continue exploring the world of Web3. It has just teased the launch of its sneakers in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on the game Fortnite. What does this mean for the future of Nike and .Swoosh?

Nike’s NFTs could be coming to Fortnite soon

The brand announced this weekend the launch of a major “sneaker hunt” on Fortnite. Called “Airphoria”, it will probably allow players to collect Nike sneakers. This isn’t the first time the brand has collaborated with the hit game, but this time it seems to have taken to the Web3.

The logo of its NFTs platform, .Swoosh (“dotSwoosh”), has been added to the trailer. For its part, .Swoosh simply said that “Airphoria” was a major event for the “.Swoosh family”. The sneakers available on Fortnite will probably be NFT versions of Nike sneakers. The launch date is scheduled for tomorrow, so we should know more about this collaboration soon

A juicy market for Nike and .Swoosh to explore

Nike has apparently decided to start testing the potential of its NFTs on popular video games. Earlier this month, we learned that the brand had launched a collaboration with EA Sports to integrate its non-fungible tokens into the publisher’s franchises, which are known for major games such as FIFA and NBA Live.

In the case of Fortnine, the market is particularly large. The game had 243 million active players in the month just ended, quite a feat for a title that came out in 2017. Collaborations with ready-to-wear brands are numerous, but the use of NFTs could well change the game. It would introduce Web3 to Fortnite, and to a whole new category of users.

NFTs also have one advantage: they are not restricted to the Nike ecosystem. On the one hand, this means that they have a ‘real’ market value, which is not based on the game’s internal economic system. But it also means that they could be transferable outside Fortnite, to other games for example. So this could be the start of a small Web3 revolution for the successful brand
