South Park series mocks Crypto.com (CRO) ad with Matt Damon

by Thomas

The animated series South Park has cheerfully mocked the Crypto.com (CRO) ad featuring Matt Damon. In its 312th episode, the parody series suggested that the actor is pushing investors to lose all their savings by getting into cryptocurrencies.

South Park takes on Matt Damon and his partnership with Crypto.com

On February 2, 2022, the first episode of the 25th season of South Park aired in the United States on channels like MTV and Paramount Network. The plot of the episode, entitled “Pajama Day”, revolves around the ban on the right to wear pajamas to school.

In this 312th episode of the animated series, Cartman, one of the recurring characters, exclaims to his class: “What does Matt Damon say in the Bitcoin commercial? Fortune favours the bold”. Clyde, one of the class members, replies that his father “said he listened to Matt Damon and lost all his money”. He retorted that “everyone has done that! But they were brave to do it!

“We just have to be brave. But not too brave or Matt Damon will come and take all our money,” a South Park character later tackles.

This clip is an overt reference to an advert by Crypto.com (CRO), the cryptocurrency trading platform. As part of an ambitious marketing campaign, the exchange has been airing a commercial featuring actor Matt Damon since last October.

In the spot, produced by David Fincher, the actor encourages investors to be brave and take risks when buying crypto-currencies. Matt Damon compares crypto investors to the most famous pioneers in history. He concludes with the slogan: “Fortune favours the bold”.

Unsurprisingly, the platform hopes that the actor’s high profile, particularly for his role in “Alone on Mars”, will help it to increase its user base.

Unfortunately, the advert, which was considered overly epic by many internet users, received a mixed reception. Later in the South Park episode, a protagonist asks for an “end to the Matt Damon jokes please, they’re getting old”

South Park doesn’t spare cryptocurrencies

Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the animated series regularly pokes fun at actors, brands, political leaders and trends. This isn’t the first time South Park has taken on the cryptocurrency industry

Last year, an episode imagined a future where Bitcoin (BTC) was the only accepted currency. A cryptocurrency enthusiast exclaimed, using a tired cliché about digital currencies:

“This is the future, we’ve all decided that central banking is rigged, so we trust Ponzi schemes more “

The ad with Matt Damon is part of a large communication campaign to recruit new users. Recently, Crypto.com took out an ad during the Super Bowl, one of the world’s most famous sporting events. A few weeks earlier, the long-toothed exchange entered into a $700 million partnership with the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The stadium has been renamed the Crypto.com Arena
