The co-founder of Dogecoin (DOGE) is reportedly not a whale, or not anymore. Billy Markus has announced that he has only 220,000 DOGE left, or less than €35,000 at today’s prices. For comparison, there are over 132 billion DOGEs in circulation. Markus tweeted this information to indicate that he never spoke on behalf of the cryptocurrency he created.
Billy Markus reportedly owns only 220,000 DOGE
Crypto-currencies have been making the buzz in 2021. Elon Musk has actually helped the DOGE push with his numerous tweets on the subject. However, the ones that are often forgotten are the co-founders of Dogecoin. Indeed, the latter emerged from a fork of Litecoin (LTC) in 2013 and was created at the time as a joke.
However, the joke has become very serious and Dogecoin is now capitalised at tens of billions of dollars. So Billy Markus, one of the two co-founders of Dogecoin with Jackson Palmer, was keen to set the record straight on Twitter. The man who goes by the name Shibetoshi Nakamoto made it clear that he was not speaking on behalf of DOGE.
Yet another reminder:
I don’t speak for dogecoin.
I am not on the project. I am a community member. I hold about 220k doge.
I will defend those who I feel are actively making the space better. I will discourage those who I feel aren’t.
I will talk about whatever I want.

Billy Markus tells us that he would only own 220,000 DOGE, which is less than €35,000 at today’s prices. When you compare this 220,000 DOGEs to the 132 billion in circulation, it represents barely 0.000 1% of the total.
Markus adds that he is no longer on the project. He is indeed just a member of the community and will always advocate for those actively working around crypto-canine.
Finally, he states that he does not appreciate those who do nothing to make the crypto ecosystem better, implying the “trolls” who oversell Dogecoin. This echoes one of his remarks from last summer where Markus claimed that cryptocurrencies could ruin naive investors.
Billy Markus prefers to move away from Dogecoin (DOGE) and crypto-currencies
If he is no longer on the Dogecoin project, what is Shibetoshi Nakamoto doing today? On the face of it, he’s not about to create another crypto project. This is what he announced, also on Twitter. Markus adds that he has a lot of respect for the developers who continue to keep certain projects alive.
Billy Markus finally clarifies that he apparently didn’t appreciate some of the criticism he received. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why he prefers to stay away from cryptocurrencies.

In other words, we don’t really know what Billy Markus is doing today and all the assumptions are there. Starting with that of a massive sale of DOGEs when he was at his peak, which would explain why he only has 220,000 DOGEs left. But there is no evidence that this is true.
