AssangeDAO: New initiative to support Julian Assange raises $40 million

As deadlines approach for the fate of Julian Assange, initiatives to support him are multiplying. While an NFT collection was unveiled last week, today we’re talking about AssangeDAO, a decentralised autonomous organisation determined to take action on his behalf.

The AssangeDAO project and the risks of Julian Assange

Julian Assange was denied asylum in France last Friday by a vote of 17 to 31 in the National Assembly. It is one of the latest appeals to try to stop his extradition to the US where he faces 175 years in prison.

In order to support him in his legal journey, AssangeDAO, a decentralised autonomous organisation (DAO), was born and has already raised nearly 13,000 ETH, or about $40 million, on the decentralised crowdfunding platform Juicebox.

As a reminder, the founder of WikiLeaks is being prosecuted for “espionage” for revealing more than 250,000 US diplomatic documents from 2010 onwards, each of which is categorised as unclassified, confidential or secret.

These documents implicate numerous political and diplomatic figures, particularly on issues such as the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. You can find a detailed list on the Wikipedia page devoted to this subject.

AssangeDAO claims to be a collective of cypherpunks working in close collaboration with the family of the Australian journalist. Its governance mechanism will involve a multi-signature Gnosis Safe wallet that will give responsibilities to trusted individuals from the crypto ecosystem, for example Amir Taaki, a Bitcoin developer.

An echo of a recent NFT project

Through the Juicebox campaign, AssangeDAO’s goal is to bid on the digital artist Pak’s collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) unveiled today, February 7.

Last week we told you about this collection created in collaboration with Julian Assange. This collection is composed of a variation of a dynamic visual in the form of NFTs including a single version and a series of a thousand copies. The collection is called “Censored” and is a nod to Assange’s investigative work.

Whether AssangeDAO wins the auction or not, the decentralised autonomous organisation will not cease to function and will continue to carry out actions for the whistleblower’s release.

It should be noted that participants in the fundraising campaign receive the governance token in return for the JUSTICE. If they win, JUSTICE holders will vote to set a roadmap for what will be done with the NFTs.

In case of defeat, those who wish to do so will be able to recover their stake by exchanging their JUSTICE for ETH. In parallel, it will still be possible to propose actions to be implemented on the DAO forum, in support of Julian Assange.

Whatever the future of this initiative, this is a perfect example of the synergy that can be created when blockchain and the decentralised world meet a strong community.
