Some Twitter users can now add profile pictures as non-fungible tokens (NFT). Currently, the new feature is only available to Twitter Blue subscribers

Profile pictures in NFT

Twitter has launched profile picture verification as a non-fungible token (NFT) for certain users.

Twitter is limiting the release to iOS users, but says Android and website users will soon be able to view new profile pictures as NFT. Images verified on Ethereum (ETH) are displayed in a special hexagonal shape as below:

By clicking on the image, users can get multiple information about the NFT and be redirected directly to the OpenSea marketplace.

For now, only paid Twitter Blue subscribers on iOS can access this feature. According to a video published by Twitter, users can connect their wallet, including: Coinbase Wallet, MetaMask and Ledger Live. It is then possible to select any NFTs and add it to their Twitter profile.

According to a Twitter spokesperson, the company is limiting the release to Blue subscribers for the time being, in order to get feedback on the new feature and adapt the service if necessary.

Mixed reactions

Twitter has received mixed reactions from users about the new feature. Some see this as a positive development for the NFT market.

Others have pointed to implementation issues and questioned Twitter’s ultimate goal. Indeed, this new feature was allegedly created to increase subscription sales for the Blue service.

Even Elon Musk reacted to the new feature:

“It’s annoying (…) Twitter spends technical resources on this feature while malicious people and bots spam every thread to steal cryptocurrencies!”

The same feature could also be coming soon to Facebook and Instagram. Indeed, the social networking giant is planning to allow users to post NFTs on their profiles according to the Financial Times.
