Stephen Curry launches his collection of 2,974 NFTs

On the night of December 14-15, basketball player Stephen Curry became a legend in his sport by becoming the NBA’s all-time leading 3-point scorer. He surpassed Ray Allen’s previous record of 2,973.

To celebrate this milestone, the player and his supplier Under Armour turned to non-fungible tokens (NFTs). In honour of the record-breaking shot that put him further into basketball history, the collection will include 2,974 NFTs featuring the “Curry Flow” trainers he wore during the game.

But that’s not all. Owners of the Genesis Curry Flow Collection NFTs will be able to equip these trainers on their avatars in several metavers, namely Decentraland, The Sandbox and Gala Games. These are “the first wearable, cross-platform footwear NFTs,” according to Under Armour.

Within moments, the entire collection sold for $333 each. Right now, the most iconic ones are already selling for much more. Obviously, there is shoe number 2974, but also 1, symbolizing his first 3-point basket and 1479, corresponding to his 3-point record in a single game.

All the funds raised by this collection, nearly one million dollars, will be distributed to American associations facilitating access to sport for underprivileged young people.

The race to the metaverse

With this first NFT collection, Under Armour joins its two biggest competitors, Nike and Adidas, in the world of non-fungible tokens and the metaverse.

Exactly 1 month ago, German company Adidas took its first steps into the cryptocurrency industry with Coinbase and The Sandbox, before jumping into the metaverse with the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) collection.

By the way, the NBA superstar is no stranger to the world of cryptocurrencies. A few weeks ago, Stephen Curry purchased an NFT from the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection, which has become the most expensive in the industry in recent days. A few days later, the player became an official partner of the FTX trading platform, brand ambassador and shareholder of the platform.

The big fashion and sports brands are not the only ones to rush to the metaverse. Indeed, Stephen Curry was soon followed by another former NBA MVP. Already a shareholder of Coinbase since 2017, Kevin Durant became, a few days ago, an official partner and muse of the American company.
