Hundreds of Silk Road Bitcoin wallets transfer over $3 million in BTC

by Thomas

Unusual activity has just been detected in wallets associated with the dark web marketplace Silk Road, which had been dormant for over a decade. A transfer totaling over $3 million was made from several hundred different wallets to an unknown address.

Silk Road Bitcoin wallets wake up

Among the highlights of Bitcoin’s history, the Silk Road darknet marketplace stands out as both a controversial and iconic milestone. Indeed, it perfectly symbolizes a time when the adoption of BTC often flirted with illicit activities.

This position made its founder, Ross Ulbricht, a symbol of libertarian ideals based on absolute liberalism, to the point that he was granted a presidential pardon following Donald Trump’s election while he was serving a life sentence in prison in the United States.

However, even though Silk Road effectively closed down in 2013, a large number of crypto wallets remain associated with its name, according to blockchain monitoring site Arkham Intelligence. With a total estimated at more than $40 million in Bitcoin that has been inactive for over a decade.

Why “until now”? Simply because unusual activity was recorded just a few hours ago, with the simultaneous reactivation of several hundred wallets holding a total of over $3 million in BTC.

The news has been shaking up social media over the last few hours. More than 300 wallets associated with Silk Road and considered inactive for over 10 years have just woken up in a strangely coordinated manner. It’s hard not to see the shadow of Ross Ulbricht settling his final accounts.

Indeed, this situation brings to light the estimates of Coinbase director Conor Grogan, published on the X network last January when Ross Ulbricht’s official release was announced, regarding $47 million in BTC still spread across dozens of “dusty wallets.”

I found approximately 430 BTC spread across dozens of wallets associated with Ross Ulbricht that were not seized by the U.S. government and have remained untouched for over 13 years. At the time, these were likely dust wallets, but now they are collectively worth approximately $47 million.

One question is on everyone’s mind: will this process of recovering old Bitcoin dust—now equivalent to real fortunes—scattered across a multitude of wallets continue until it finally represents the entire $38.6 million still listed by Arkham Intelligence? A case to follow…

There is still $38.6 million left in Silk Road's wallets
