Cryptocurrencies are not perceived in the same way from one country to another. With this in mind, we took a look at the popularity of Bitcoin (BTC) in Google Trends searches over the last 12 months. Here are the results

How popular is Bitcoin according to Google Trends?

In addition to the price of Bitcoin (BTC), it can sometimes be interesting to look at the interest in it, particularly through these web searches. To do this, we analysed the data provided by Google Trends over the last 12 months, assigning a popularity score ranging from 0 to 100.

First of all, we can see that the search for ‘bitcoin’ is on an annual low, extending the search to the whole world:

As we can see from the graph above, the peak in popularity over the last 12 months was reached during the period from 12 to 18 June 2022. From a price perspective, this corresponds to the week when BTC plunged from $28,000 to under $18,000 before a meagre rebound. In terms of news, we were right in the middle of the Celsius and Three Arrows Capital (3AC) crash.

For France, the result is much the same, with a few variations. For example, the popularity score for ‘bitcoin’ is 22 for the current week, compared with 25 for the rest of the world.

In terms of the regional podium, the Île-de-France region came out on top, followed by Corsica with a score of 94, and then the PACA region with 92 points.

Comparison with “BTC” search

Looking at the results by country, we see that “bitcoin” is most popular in El Salvador, which is not surprising given the local politics. On this criterion, France comes in 40th place with a score of 11.

It will be interesting to note that the search “BTC” offers almost completely different results. While Nigeria remains on the podium, moving up from 2nd to 3rd place, the Bahamas comes out of nowhere to take 1st place, taking over from El Salvador in 13th place with a score of 11. France, meanwhile, is in 64th place with a score of 4:

Asian countries are poorly represented here, in contrast to searches related to the GameFi sector. With the exception of Turkey, which straddles 2 continents, Singapore is the leading Asian country for the keyword “bitcoin”, the only representative in the top 10, and the query “BTC” will see Pakistan and China in 8th and 9th position.

Generally speaking, these different keywords gain in popularity during periods of strong upward or downward market movements, before stabilising during range phases such as the current one.
