The next historic update for Ethereum will be Glamsterdam

by Christian

While Ethereum activated the Fusaka update earlier this month, the next big event for the blockchain is Glamsterdam. Let’s take a look at this next step.

After Fusaka, Ethereum now turns its attention to Glamsterdam

On December 3, the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain mainnet activated Fusaka, a major update bringing a host of new features. Among the main contributions are an increase in the gas limit and the introduction of Peer-to-peer Data Availability Sampling (PeerDAS), which, in short, lightens the workload of nodes.

The next big step for Ethereum is the Glamsterdam update, whose name combines the Gloas update to the Consensus layer and the Amsterdam update to the Execution layer.

At the heart of this upgrade is Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) number 7732, which incorporates the concept of Enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation (ePBS).

In short, EIP-7732 proposes to separate the actors who build blocks from those who propose them. On the user side, the effects of such a change should be felt particularly in terms of the misuse of Maximal Extractable Value (MEV). Currently, users who wish to prioritize their transactions for whatever reason can “bribe” validators with higher fees, a practice that should be made more difficult with the model put forward by EIP-7732.

Each major update to Ethereum brings with it a series of EIPs that allow the network to be adjusted to the realities on the ground. Over the coming months, we will be able to focus our attention on all those that will make up the next major milestone for the first smart contract blockchain.

In terms of timing, Glamsterdam is expected to be released sometime in 2026, but this type of project requires so much work that we will have to wait a little longer to get a more precise idea of the schedule. We will see if these updates have a positive impact on the price of Ethereum in the coming months.
