On Sorare, Kylian Mbappé’s unique card was sold for €416,000

Kylian Mbappé is making a splash even in the world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). On the blockchain game Sorare, his unique card was sold at auction for 153 ETH, or about €416,000. A nice price that reflects the craze around NFTs, but also the player he represents.

Sorare, the Web3 version of football

Sorare is a football video game launched in 2019 by two French developers. It is based on the Ethereum blockchain, and thanks to the non-fungible token technology, players own a card that cannot be duplicated or transferred to another player.

For each player in the game, 1,111 cards are issued as NFTs each season. They are classified by category: the most common ones are present in the game in 1000 copies, the rare ones in 100 copies, the super rare ones in 10 copies. And the unique ones, only one copy. That’s why the auctions for players’ unique cards can quickly reach huge sums.

Recently, Kylian Mbappé’s unique card from the NFT Sorare game was auctioned off. The player had posted a short video on his Instagram account a few days ago at the beginning of the sale to warn of the auction.

The auction ended last night, and the user “TeamBambi” got the prize for 153 ETH, or about 416,000€. A nice price that gives the holder the exclusive NFT card for the 2021/2022 season of the world champion

Kylian Mbappé behind Erling Haaland, but ahead of Ronaldo

Although the price may seem crazy, other footballer cards have sold for much more. This was the case for Norwegian Erling Haaland, current striker for German club Dortmund, whose card sold for more than $680,000, or more than €600,000, last February. On the game, that was the equivalent of 265 ETH. But it’s important to note that the auction winner has been trying to resell his card ever since without finding a buyer.

Many players wanted to see World Champion Mbappé’s card sell for more than the Norwegian international’s card. But unfortunately for them, this is not the case.

Small comfort: the price of Kylian Mbappé’s cards has risen sharply since last season his card was sold for “only” €54,000. And last season, Ronaldo’s single card sold for $290,000. So Kylian Mbappé is ahead of Ronaldo, on Sorare at least. Is this a worthwhile investment? The future will tell us.
