American football star Odell Beckham Jr. will receive his new salary in Bitcoin (BTC) and is using the opportunity to give away $1 million in crypto-currencies to his fans in partnership with Cash App. Among athletes, especially in the US, receiving one’s salary in cryptocurrencies is becoming increasingly common.

American football star Odell Beckham Junior, who recently joined the Los Angeles Rams, will accept his new salary in Bitcoin (BTC).
The former Cleveland Browns star receiver said on Twitter that he will now receive his salary in Bitcoin as part of a deal with Cash App, a mobile payment service.

Cash App is a digital wallet service developed by Square Inc. that allows users to transfer money, as well as invest and exchange Bitcoin using a smartphone app.
The player said in a video linked to the tweet that the move marked “the beginning of a new era”. Beckham Jr also generously offered the equivalent of $1 million in Bitcoin to his fans and followers on his Twitter account.
Cryptocurrency salaries a new trend among sports athletes
Beckham Junior is not the first athlete to take the plunge. American football star Russell Okung has been paid in Bitcoin since 2020.
In April 2021, Vivek Ranadivé, the owner of the Sacramento Kings (NBA franchise), announced his willingness to offer Bitcoin salaries as an option to players and staff.
Similarly, in early November, Green Bay Packers star Aaron Rodgers announced a similar deal with Cash App, allowing him to receive part of his salary in cryptocurrencies.
This move marks a further step in the adoption of crypto-currencies, and particularly Bitcoin, in the world of sports.
Sports clubs are also looking to adapt to an increasingly cryptocurrency-savvy audience, as evidenced by the success of Sorare’s collectible football cards.
