In the face of discontent, OpenSea retrogrades its limit on the creation of NFTs

by Thomas

A measure that did not last long… OpenSea had introduced a limit yesterday on the number of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that could be created by each user. But there was so much grumbling that the platform was forced to get rid of it the very next day. What happened

OpenSea imposes new limits on the creation of NFTs

In the past day, the OpenSea platform announced that creators using its free tool were now limited to 5 collections in total, and 50 NFTs per collection. It justified the move by saying that it had received feedback from users, without specifying the nature of the feedback.

OpenSea also invited users to let it know how the change affected them. Users did not hesitate to do so, and the feedback was mostly negative. Several creators explained that they could not finish their current collection:

“I committed to a collection of 100 pieces. I’m at 96 out of 100, and now I’m stuck with this message, and I won’t be able to finish it. Ever. Thanks!”

OpenSea forced to backpedal

Creators always had the option of deploying their own smart contracts, to avoid this limitation. But the particularly high cost of deployment (over $1,000 in fees) did not necessarily encourage them to do so.

There was so much grumbling that OpenSea retrograded the next day, apologising for not having asked its community in advance. The measure was cancelled:

“To all the creators in our community who have been impacted by the 50 object limit we applied to our free minting tool: we heard you and we’re sorry. “

Furthermore, the platform clarified why it had made this decision. The tool in question is said to be 80% used for work that constitutes plagiarism, fake collections, as well as spam. The limitation was therefore intended to combat this.

OpenSea admitted that it should have discussed the issue with the community before taking this decision. The platform also confirms that it will continue to address the issue:

We are working on a number of solutions to support creators while deterring malicious actors. We are committed to presenting these changes to you in advance, before we implement them.”
