Amid a very gloomy market for cryptocurrencies, Elon Musk has once again put Dogecoin (DOGE) in the spotlight. The billionaire has indeed revisited an old promise: to send Dogecoin to the moon through his company SpaceX.
A real Dogecoin on the real moon?
Although Elon Musk has distanced himself from cryptocurrencies in recent years, he was once passionate about the ecosystem—and Dogecoin in particular. In 2021, the SpaceX CEO made a promise to his X followers: to send Dogecoin to the moon.
SpaceX will place a real Dogecoin on the real moon.
But the promise has not yet materialized. There was, however, the DOGE-1 spacecraft, launched in 2023: this spacecraft, named after the cryptocurrency and funded in Dogecoin, orbited the moon to collect data.
However, no “real” Dogecoin was sent to the moon—regardless of the physical form chosen by Elon Musk. Hence a recent question from a user on his social media: When will a Dogecoin finally be sent to the moon? His response: “Maybe next year”:
Maybe next year

In response to another tweet announcing that “Doge to the moon is inevitable,” Elon Musk replied with a simple “Yes.” This revives an old narrative in the ecosystem: Doge to the moon.
DOGE price surges following Musk’s statements
As is often the case, Elon Musk’s statements have impacted the price of DOGE, which surged 10.7% immediately after the tweet was posted. However, the price has since experienced significant volatility:

The DOGE price was shaken by Elon Musk’s statements
This shows that the ties between Elon Musk and Dogecoin remain strong—the meme cryptocurrency continues to be associated, for better or worse, with the billionaire’s antics. But the “Elon effect” seems to have weakened: DOGE is trading at a level 85% lower than its all-time high in 2021.
