Dogecoin on the moon? – Elon Musk causes DOGE to surge (again)

by Patricia

In a very gloomy context for cryptocurrencies, Elon Musk has once again made Dogecoin (DOGE) the talk of the town. The billionaire has indeed reiterated an old promise: to send Dogecoin to the moon thanks to his company SpaceX.

A real Dogecoin on the real moon?

Although Elon Musk has distanced himself from cryptocurrencies in recent years, he was once passionate about the ecosystem, and Dogecoin in particular. In 2021, the SpaceX CEO made a promise to his followers: to send Dogecoin to the moon.

SpaceX will put real Dogecoin on the real moon.

But the promise has not materialized since. There was the DOGE-1 shuttle, launched in 2023: this spacecraft, named after the cryptocurrency and financed in Dogecoin, orbited the moon to collect data. However, no “real” Dogecoin was sent to the moon—whatever physical form Elon Musk chose. This prompted a recent question from a user on his social network: when will a Dogecoin finally be sent to the moon? His response: “Maybe next year.”

To another tweet, which announced that “Doge to the moon is inevitable,” Elon Musk replied with a simple “Yes.” This revives an old narrative in the ecosystem: Doge to the moon.

DOGE price surges following Musk’s statements

As is often the case, Elon Musk’s statements had an effect on the price of DOGE, which surged 10.7% immediately after the tweet was posted. However, the price has been highly volatile since then:

The price of DOGE was shaken by Elon Musk's statements

This shows that the links between Elon Musk and Dogecoin remain strong—the humorous cryptocurrency continues to be associated, willingly or unwillingly, with the billionaire’s escapades. But the “Elon effect” seems to have weakened: DOGE is trading at a level 85% lower than its all-time high in 2021.
