Celebrity cryptocurrencies were very popular in 2024, particularly alongside the rise of the memecoin sector. This trend has recently been revived by rapper Kanye West, leading to speculation that Cristiano Ronaldo may have seized the opportunity to do the same.
Has Cristiano Ronaldo launched a CR7 cryptocurrency?
Some time ago, launching cryptocurrencies became a very popular activity among celebrities. And for good reason: they have huge, totally devoted communities, but one that is largely ignorant of basic security rules in the sector.
These operations quickly became very lucrative for their initiators, but most often ended in record losses for the investors involved. And just when this bad habit seemed to have finally been forgotten, rapper Kanye West recently decided to try his hand at it with his YZY token—down 80% at the time of writing.
This news seems to have immediately reignited interest in this type of venture. Indeed, persistent rumors in recent days have suggested that star soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo was about to launch a CR7 token, in reference to his nickname.
This is not entirely impossible, as he has already participated in a cryptocurrency-related operation with the Binance platform in 2022, as part of an official NFT collection. This is all the more likely when you consider the support provided by certain influencers on the X network to promote the launch.
A clearly organized rug pull procedure
It should be noted that there has been no official communication from Cristiano Ronaldo confirming the launch of this CR7 token. However, a series of fake cryptocurrencies of this type quickly appeared on the Solana network over the weekend, with success that was as rapid as it was worrying. And for good reason: some of the addresses of these fake tokens were promoted on the accounts of seemingly unscrupulous influencers, in posts that have since been mostly deleted. Nevertheless, these announcements were visible enough to cause the capitalization of one of these tokens to skyrocket to over $140 million… before collapsing by 98% in just 15 minutes.
A series of launches quickly identified as a cascade of rug pulls by the analysis company Bubblemaps, to the point of suggesting a kind of organized scam. However, X accounts such as Whale.Guru (400,000 followers) are still announcing the launch of “Cristiano Ronaldo’s memecoin” for “this month.”

It seems likely that after the launch of Kanye West’s YZY, some influencers jumped at the opportunity to claim that Cristiano Ronaldo would also be launching a token, using their accounts. They then launched an unofficial token and posted the contract address, luring investors into rug pulls.
Vitalik Buterin
Everything suggests that the announcement of the launch of this CR7 token is nothing more than a scam designed to take advantage of the footballer’s popularity to deceive overly eager investors. Especially since there has been no official announcement on the subject from the person most concerned: Cristiano Ronaldo himself.
