Bernard Planche, a renowned French truffle grower, decided to sell one of the largest truffles ever discovered as a non-fungible token (NFT). The auction was concluded on OpenSea for approximately 8750 euros.
A giant truffle in NFT
Bernard Planche, a truffle grower in the Dordogne for over 30 years, found a “tuber melanosporum” weighing about 1.2 kilos that he presented at the Sarlat market on February 5.
Building on the reputation of his beloved region among wine lovers around the world, Bernard Planche chose to combine modernity and tradition and auction this giant truffle as a non-fungible token (NFT). The auction will take place on the OpenSea marketplace from Wednesday 9 February to Friday 11 February at 10pm.
The winning bid is 3.41 WrappedEther (wETH) or approximately €8750. In general, 1 kilo of Périgord truffle has a value of about 1500 euros. The identity of the buyer remains unknown.
The lucky buyer will also be invited to enjoy a private day of truffle farming demonstrations (searching for truffles with dogs or pigs) at Saint-Cirq-Madelon, in the Périgord, the domain of Bernard Planche. The day will end with a meal on site with the “Surprise du Chef”!

NFTs used to support traditions
Bernard Planche, who has been growing truffles for more than 30 years, believes that putting this giant truffle on the blockchain will help prove the provenance, quality and authenticity of the truffle. He said:
I see the use of NFTs as a way to demonstrate how new technologies can be used to support and even strengthen long-standing cultural traditions.
Advisory studio Venture Makers worked with Planche to sell this 1.2kg+ truffle as an NFT. The studio was co-founded by the creators of the NFT Pokmi project, Nils Lataillade and Marco Garnica
