MetaMask has issued an alert about a scam, and reminded that no cryptocurrency airdrop is planned at this time. A necessary reminder at a time when scammers are banking on such promises, and when rumors about a possible MetaMask cryptocurrency are circulating.

Published yesterday, the warning urges users to be cautious about promises of aidrop:
There are quite a few false rumors going around about a MetaMask snapshot/airdrop/etc. on March 31.
These rumors are not only false, but they are dangerous. They create opportunities for scammers and phishers.
Please be on the lookout for fake sites in the coming days

Will MetaMask offer a token?
As we know, scammers are particularly quick to follow trends in order to capitalize on the enthusiasm of the community. Recently, it’s a (real) airdrop that’s been causing a stir: that of Arbitrum, which was launching its ARB token. Furthermore, rumors have been circulating about the possible launch of a cryptocurrency by MetaMask for some time.
There is no doubt that scammers are relying on these elements by offering this fake airdrop of MetaMask. We would like to remind you that you should always check the official communications of an entity when it seems to propose an airdrop. A distribution of tokens from a major actor like MetaMask would indeed not go unnoticed, and would be confirmed by serious media.
MetaMask could however offer a token in the future. This is at least what the CEO of its parent company ConsenSys, Joe Lubin, said last March. He said that the launch of a DAO as well as a token could allow the decentralization of the Web3 wallet. So this is a development to follow in the coming months.
