Hacker takes control of BNB Chain’s X account — Changpeng Zhao raises the alarm

by Tim

This morning, a hacker took control of the BNB Chain’s X account, directing investors to a fraudulent link for a supposed airdrop. Here are the details of what we know.

BNB Chain’s X account hacked

This morning, Changpeng Zhao (CZ), the founder of Binance, sounded the alarm about the unauthorized takeover of the BNB Chain’s X account:

In a second message, he provided a little more detail about the situation:

The @BNBCHAIN X account has been compromised. The hacker has posted a series of links to phishing websites that ask for Wallet Connect [login]. Do not connect your wallet. Security teams have already notified X, working first to suspend the account and then to restore access. We are also requesting the removal of all phishing websites. Always check domains very carefully, even those of official X domain names. Stay safe!

On the BNB Chain X account, we can indeed see that fraudulent tweets are being shared, claiming an airdrop of BNB tokens:

In this case, the fraudulent link redirects to a somewhat convincing web page, with no functional links other than one to connect a wallet. At the same time, the scam can also be easily detected, given that the URL of the site is “bhbchain.com”:

While the circumstances surrounding this hack are still unclear at this time, it is highly likely that this is a case of SIM swapping by one of the employees with access to the account. However, this will need to be reconfirmed at a later date.

In any case, this serves as a reminder that caution should always be exercised, even when dealing with links shared by official accounts.
