PayPal Links makes sending cryptocurrencies as easy as sending a message

by Christian

Cryptocurrency transfers are fast and secure, but can sometimes be difficult to understand at first glance. PayPal is trying to find its place in this market by offering transfers that are as easy as sending a text message.

PayPal Links: send and receive cryptocurrencies as easily as sending a text message

For many years now, online payment giant PayPal has been trying to find its place in the rapidly developing cryptocurrency sector. This is a difficult equation to solve, as this ecosystem has historically been designed to do without intermediaries of this kind.

This is why PayPal is trying to establish itself with services primarily designed to simplify everyday cryptocurrency transactions. The latest development in this area is the announced launch of the PayPal Links option, which allows money transfers to be “as easy as sending a text message.”

Example of a money transfer with PayPal Links

PayPal Links launches today. Send and receive money as easily as sending a text message. Share a one-time link via text message, direct message (DM), or email. Available now in the United States, and coming soon to other countries.

A simplified transfer option that should very soon include cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and many others. PayPal has also announced that its “peer-to-peer (P2P) experience is about to go even further.”

The goal: to simplify cryptocurrency transfers with PayPal, Venmo, and also “a growing number of digital wallets around the world that support crypto and stablecoins,” such as its PYUSD.

Peer-to-peer: the new “cornerstone”

In fact, the launch of this Links option follows the implementation of the PayPal World platform in June of this year. A tool designed to “connect the world’s largest digital payment systems and wallets,” such as the United States, China, India, and Russia, but not yet Europe.

This international expansion will quickly enable PayPal Links to spread to the United Kingdom, Italy, and other markets in the coming weeks, although it will initially remain available only to US users.

According to available information, P2P money transfers made using the PayPal Links service will be exempt from 1099-K reporting requirements in the United States. This is a tax measure that requires taxpayers to report all income received via an online platform.

As part of this announcement, the online payment giant is keen to present its peer-to-peer option as a “cornerstone” of its current development, with total payment volume up 10% in the second quarter compared to the same period in 2024.

This is an unprecedented opening for cryptocurrencies, with a connection announced to “billions of wallets around the world.”
