Ledger and MetaMask: The hardware wallet will soon be compatible with the mobile application

by Tim

From next autumn, it will be possible to secure the MetaMask mobile application with the Ledger Nano X. Until now, the famous hardwares wallet was only compatible with the application on computer via the browser extension, so it is a step further towards security

Ledger goes one step further with MetaMask

While we previously strongly advised against using MetaMask on phones, this warning will soon be reconsidered thanks to Ledger:

Until now, Ledger has only been compatible with MetaMask through the browser extension on computers. From next autumn, it will be possible to link its Nano X to the wallet’s mobile application. This will require the use of Bluetooth, making the Nano S and Nano S Plus models incompatible.

Carl Anderson, vice president of B2C engineering at Ledger, is pleased with the strengthened partnership:

MetaMask and Ledger are self-preserving maxis, so it made a lot of sense for us to partner to provide Web3 users with a great mix of smooth experience and top-notch security. “

A partnership that solves a real-world problem

It can be tempting to handle your crypto-assets on your phone. It allows for greater responsiveness in times of need. But the fact that the funds are not secured by a hardware wallet poses a major problem: MetaMask stores the private key of an address directly on the user’s machine.

Thus, any malicious file inadvertently downloaded can potentially lead to a theft of the private key and thus, of cryptocurrencies. This applies to both phones and computers.

Although this is not a malicious file, last April an investor had a similar unpleasant surprise after a social engineering manipulation. Hackers convinced him to carry out a series of actions, which gave them access to his private key.

A hardware wallet is still the best solution, as the private key is stored on it rather than on a machine with Internet access. With the requirement for physical validation, many of the dangers to the security of one’s assets are eliminated.

Thanks to Ledger’s and MetaMask’s future innovation, the use of Web3 applications on phones will become more secure.
