Cryptocurrency prices plummeted overnight, following significant losses on Wall Street. Among the top 50, only one cryptocurrency continues to hold its ground against the downturn: Zcash (ZEC). How can this be explained?
Zcash, the sole survivor that hasn’t fallen since yesterday
All 50 of the cryptocurrencies with the highest market capitalization are in the red this morning, following significant drops overnight. Bitcoin (BTC) lost 9%, while Ether (ETH) fell 10%. The total market capitalization of cryptocurrencies has fallen 8.4% since yesterday.
But one cryptocurrency has bucked the trend: Zcash (ZEC). Around 9 a.m. this morning, ZEC was enjoying a 3.5% gain since the previous day:

The price of Zcash (ZEC) has managed to hold steady in recent hours
It’s worth noting that the ZEC price has been climbing steadily in recent weeks. Over the past month, it has risen by 146%. Over the past three months, its price has skyrocketed by more than 2,000%. It has even surpassed its rival Monero (XMR) in the rankings—Monero is in 30th place among the cryptocurrencies with the highest market capitalization, while ZEC now ranks 14th.
Why all this confidence in ZCash?
Zcash seemed to have been largely forgotten in recent years, overshadowed by its more high-profile competitor, XMR. But 2025 is the year of ZEC’s comeback. The cryptocurrency has attracted a flood of new investors, propelling its price higher.
One reason is that its anonymization capabilities are highly valued, and the asset is more readily available than Monero. XMR has, in fact, been delisted from many exchanges, while Zcash—which is more “regulatory-friendly”—has managed to remain listed.
ZEC is transparent by default, functioning similarly to Bitcoin. Users must choose to “shield” their addresses to make them anonymous. This feature appeals to regulated companies, which see fewer risks in it.
The network has also seen numerous improvements in recent months, making it easier to use. These factors have combined to spark a “ZEC mania,” which has driven the rest of the surge. As a result, ZEC is holding steady while the rest of the cryptocurrencies are falling.
Caution is advised, however: beyond Zcash’s promises, elements of FOMO appear to be driving its price increase. Furthermore, it should be noted that the price of ZEC is still very far from its all-time high. In October 2016, it reached $3,191. Nine years later, it stands at just $672.
