Ethereum’s Next Major Update Will Be Glamsterdam

by Tim

While Ethereum activated the Fusaka update earlier this month, the blockchain’s next major milestone is Glamsterdam. Here’s a look at this upcoming phase.

After Fusaka, Ethereum is now turning its attention to Glamsterdam

On December 3, the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain mainnet activated Fusaka, a major update bringing a host of new features. Among the key additions are an increase in the gas limit, as well as the introduction of Peer-to-peer Data Availability Sampling (PeerDAS), which, in short, helps reduce the workload on nodes.

Now, the next major milestone for Ethereum is the Glamsterdam update, whose name combines the Gloas update to the Consensus layer and the Amsterdam update to the Execution layer.

At the heart of this upgrade is Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) number 7732, which incorporates the concept of Enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation (ePBS).

In short, EIP-7732 proposes separating the actors who build blocks from those who propose them. From the user’s perspective, the effects of such a change should be particularly felt regarding the misuse of Maximal Extractable Value (MEV). Currently, users wishing to prioritize their transactions for whatever reason can “bribe” validators with higher fees, a practice that should become more difficult under the model proposed by EIP-7732.

Every major update to Ethereum brings its own set of EIPs designed to adapt the network to real-world conditions. Over the coming months, we will be able to keep an eye on all the EIPs that will make up the next major milestone for the first smart contract blockchain.

As for timelines, Glamsterdam is expected sometime in 2026, but this type of project requires so much work that we’ll have to wait a bit longer for a more precise timeline. We’ll see if these updates have a positive impact on Ethereum’s price in the coming months.
