Overnight, the Aptos blockchain crashed for several hours, affecting the smooth flow of transactions. The project teams believe that this incident was caused by a spike in activity on the network’s first anniversary.
Aptos experienced several hours of downtime on its blockchain
Tonight, the Aptos blockchain (APT) experienced an outage lasting about 5 hours, which resulted in transactions being blocked. Several cryptocurrency exchanges, such as OKX and Upbit, temporarily halted withdrawals, citing “network maintenance”.
For its part, Aptos confirmed the outage, but didn’t actually give specific reasons other than a sharp increase in activity due to an event celebrating the blockchain’s first anniversary, launched on October 18, 2022:
“Your energy for Aptos One was so electric you turned off the lights! This means that for now, transactions on the grid are affected. We are working diligently to resolve the issue and will update you when it is complete. “

However, the various Aptos blockchain researchers are too imprecise to be able to gauge the real impact of this spike in activity.
In the absence of more accurate data for the past 24 hours, we can still note that October 17 would have been the third day with the most transactions on the network – nearly 1.8 million:

In addition, it is reported that the blockchain has reached a maximum speed of almost 6,000 transactions per second. By comparison, the teams behind Aptos announced a theoretical average capacity of 130,000 transactions per second during the project’s launch, which shows just how far we still have to go.
This disruption will give developers an opportunity to draw conclusions about how to improve blockchain performance during high-demand episodes.
